Six Dead In Goa Temple Jatrotsav Stampede, Several Injured

Goa Stampede: A stampede at a temple festival in Shirgao, Goa, resulted in the deaths of at least six people and injuries to over 30. The injured have been admitted to hospitals.

Goa Temple Stampede: A stampede at a temple festival of Shree Lairai Devi in Shirgao, Goa, resulted in the deaths of at least six people on Friday. More than 30 were injured, North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal confirmed. The injured have been admitted to Goa Medical College and North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa. Some of the injured are reportedly in a critical condition.

The Congress condemned the incident, stating: "Goa Congress is deeply saddened by the stampede at Jatrotsav of Shree Lairai Devi,Shirgao. We condemn this tragic incident and offer heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Wishing a speedy recovery to all those injured."

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the hospitals to speak with the injured and assess the situation. During the visit, Sawant told media persons at the hospital: "An inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the chain of events."

Witnesses told local media house 'Prudent Media' that the stampede occurred as a result of mismanagement by the authorities.

The Lairai Devi temple festival, held near the popular tourist destination of Bicholim beach, is particularly known for its fire-walking tradition that draws hundreds every year. Lairai Devi is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvati.
