Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi raised doubts over India's surgical strikes in Pakistan and demanded immediate action against the perpetrators of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam
Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday raised doubts over India’s surgical strikes in Pakistan and demanded immediate action against the perpetrators of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that left 26 people dead.
Speaking at a press conference, Channi questioned the transparency around the military operations. “No one in the country saw the surgical strike in Pakistan,” he said. “In our own country, if a bomb falls, will we not even find out about it? They say surgical strikes were carried out in Pakistan, but nothing happened, nowhere were the strikes seen, and no one got to know.”

Reiterating his long-standing demand for evidence, the former Punjab Chief Minister said, “I have always asked for proof. But today, it is crucial to heal the wounds of the nation’s people. We demand action — identify those responsible and punish them.”
“Following the earlier CWC meeting, the government was assured that the Congress stands with it on any decision taken against terrorism and in support of the country’s unity and integrity...This is a major crisis that demands a review of the security lapse. The government must provide appropriate compensation to the families of those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam attack, initiate their rehabilitation, and come forward to support their families,” he remarked.
The former Punjab chief minister stressed CWC's demand as he said, “Today, questions are being raised over the government’s ability to keep the country safe. The entire nation is waiting to see when the government will take action against countries like Pakistan, which are promoting terrorism. Our demands are: The government must act and take strict action against those who have spread terror in our country. On this issue, the Congress stands with the government; The families of those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack must be compensated, and steps must be taken for their rehabilitation.”

'Country Awaits Accountability, Answers, And Justice': CWC Resolution On Pahalgam Attack
The remarks came after the Congress party passed a resolution during a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge. The resolution, also attended by senior leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, K. C. Venugopal, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, strongly condemned the attack and demanded accountability from the Centre.
“The entire country awaits accountability, answers, and justice. In the face of such an unforgivable provocation, the Congress believes this is not a time for politics but a moment that calls for unity, strength, and national resolve. We must rise above partisan divides and send out an unambiguous message that India stands together and will not be broken,” the resolution stated.
The party called on the government to act decisively, saying, “The masterminds and perpetrators of this cowardly attack must face full consequences for their actions. The Congress urges the Government of India to act with firmness, strategic clarity and international coordination to isolate and penalise Pakistan for its continued export of terror into our territory.”
It also stressed the need for long-term support to the families of the victims, most of whom were holidaymakers. “Compensation alone is not enough. Long-term rehabilitation, mental health support, and honouring the memory of those lost through national recognition and civic remembrance are equally essential,” the resolution added.

The Congress Working Committee stands in solidarity and support with the 26 families, who lost their loved ones in the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The pain of these families is the pain of the entire nation. The CWC…
Reaffirming its earlier stance, the CWC reiterated the demand for “time-bound accountability” into what it termed “serious lapses” in security and intelligence in one of India’s most heavily-guarded regions.
“The people of India deserve transparency and accountability,” the party said, while expressing solidarity with the families of the 26 victims. “The pain of these families is the pain of the entire nation,” the resolution stated.
The party further appealed to citizens to remain calm and united in the wake of the tragedy. “Let our response to this act of terror reflect the strength of our democracy, the depth of our unity, and the resilience of our Republic,” the resolution concluded.
