55 Locations In Capital, 244 Districts In Country: India Prepares For Nationwide Mock Drill On May 7

Delhi will see the civil defence drill at around 55 locations, including Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3, Khan Market, Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi Cantonment.

India is set to witness a nationwide civil defence mock drill across 244 districts in the country on May 7 in view of the security concerns following the Pahalgam terror attack last month.

Delhi will see the civil defence drill at around 55 locations, including Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3, Khan Market, Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi Cantonment. 

The drills come after a directive from the Union Home Ministry amid escalating tensions with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack.

The measures to be taken during the drill include operationalisation of air raid warning sirens and training of civilians on civil defence aspects to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack.

Some of the measures include crash blackout measures, early camouflaging of vital plants and installations and updation of evacuation plans and their rehearsal.

In view of the government order, several governments have ramped up preparedness for Wednesday's drill.

Delhi: The authorities in the capital will carry out mock drills at 55 locations in the city at 4 pm on May 7. The drill will simulate multiple hostile scenarios like air raids, multiple fire emergencies, and search and rescue operations, among others. Sirens will be sounded by police teams across the 15 police districts in the city as part of the exercise. Special patrol units have been mobilised to cover key areas, including Connaught Place, India Gate, Janpath, Yashwant Palace, Gole Market and vital installations.

Uttar Pradesh: The civil defence mock drill will be carried out across all districts of Uttar Pradesh in coordination with police, fire services, disaster response forces and local administrations. Though the centre had identified 19 districts for mock drills, the state government has decided to expand it to all districts. In Lucknow, a rehearsal was held on Tuesday at the police lines area, where a simulated bomb blast was enacted. 

West Bengal: The drill will be conducted across West Bengal for the next seven days from Wednesday, a senior official said. Sirens have been installed on the roofs of 90 government buildings in Kolkata, including the Civil Defence building, Mahajati Sadan auditorium, Calcutta High Court, Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar, and several police stations. 55,000 civic volunteers and 7,200 'Aapda Mitra' have already been trained in the state as part of the mock drill, PTI reported.

Kerala: The civil defence drills will be conducted in 14 districts of Kerala on May 7. As part of the drill, residents' associations and panchayats are expected to appoint local leaders to guide people. Meanwhile, schools, community halls, and other key locations should keep first aid kits ready.

Andhra Pradesh: Visakhapatnam district Collector MN Harendhira Prasad has said that two locations - Kotha Jalaripeta and Oxygen Towers - have been chosen for the drill. "Tomorrow's mock drill we are planning in two locations. One in the old town, near the old post office, Kotha Jalaripeta and the second one is in the Oxygen Towers," Prasad told PTI. The collector said the air raid will be simulated at Kotha Jalaripeta at 4 pm, entailing what needs to be done in the event of aerial bombings such as evacuation and others.

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh administration will conduct a 10-minute blackout drill on Wednesday and urged residents to turn off electricity on their premises during the exercise. The blackout drill will be conducted from 7:30 pm to 7:40 pm on Wednesday, Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav told reporters. As part of the drill, air raid warning sirens will be activated at 7:30 pm and continue for 10 minutes.

Rajasthan: Rajasthan Chief Secretary Sudhansh Pant reviewed the preparations for mock drill. In a meeting, held through video conference, Pant gave necessary instructions to the officers of the departments concerned regarding compliance of the home ministry's guidelines for assessment of civil security strengthening and functionality.

Karnataka: In Karnataka, the mock drills will be conducted in Bengaluru, Karwar, and Raichur from Wednesday. The first mock drill will be held on the premises of the Director General, Civil Defence in Bengaluru at 4 pm, while in other designated areas in the state it will be held on subsequent days decided during the week. Mock drills will be held at three locations in the state, including Bengaluru city, with numerous defence establishments and is a very sensitive district for Karnataka, officials said.
